May 15, 2023, kicks off another year of the Fit Youth Initiative Summer Walking Program. We are excited for you to see what we have in store for you! The program will provide you with opportunities to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and visit new places.
It All Begins With One Step encourages participants to establish a healthy walking habit by tracking the extra steps taken each day. We also want you to reap the benefits of improving your mood by spending time outdoors! Earn toe tokens and a t-shirt by completing milestones throughout your journey. You can take your tracker to any participating partner location beginning May 15 to pick up the tokens you have earned.
We are going to offering our hiking adventures a little differently this year. We have listed several different locations to hike in Tuscarawas County. Directions to each location is located in the flyer that is available at the link below. Once you have visited, enjoyed, and hiked the park/trail that you visited, take a selfie of yourself at the trailhead. Show the selfie to our partner site to receive your special toe token.
Sites to visit include: Tuscora Park, Camp Tuscazoar, Zoar Wetland Arboretum, Dover City Park, Panhandle Passage, Norma Johnson Center, Beach City Wildlife Area-Dundee Falls, Schoenbrunn Village-Lower Trails and the Wilderness Center. Three different locations on The Towpath Trail to include, Canal Lands Park, Fort Laurens Trailhead, and MdDonnell Trailhead. Last but not least, two locations on the Buckhorn Creek Trail, Wolf Sation Trailhead, and Bethel Station Trailhead.
The summer walking program ends on August 31, and if you have completed the required 30 hours of walking, return your tracker to the Tuscarawas County Extension office by the September 5 deadline and you will receive a t-shirt. T-shirt pick-up will be held September 27 at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds at the Clover Cafe' from 3 to 6pm.
