Ohio State University Extension in Tuscarawas County is the lead agency for the Fit Youth Initiative, a coalition of agencies concerned about childhood obesity and family wellness. Activities include a Summer Walking Program and Adventure Hikes.

May 18, 2024, kicks off the 20th year of the Fit Youth Initiative Summer Walking Program! We are excited for you to see what we have in store for you! The program will provide you with opportunities to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and visit new places.

This year's theme, "Making Strides, Improving Lives," encourages participants to establish a healthy walking habit by tracking the extra steps taken each day. We also want you to reap the benefits of improving your mood by spending time outdoors! Earn toe tokens, a t-shirt, and win giveaways by completing milestones throughout your journey. You can pick up your tracker starting May 16. You can also get your tracker at the official kick-off event at the Canal Lands Park Trailhead beginning at 10 a.m.

This year we are offering eight themed walks with programs from our FCS Educator, Rebecca Davis. By participating in these free programs, you earn special tokens, extra entries in the fitness watch raffle, and more!

  1. May 18 - 10 AM: Kick-off! Outdoor Safety at Canal Lands Park Trailhead
  2. May 29 - 5 PM: Squeezing in Extra Fitness at Panhandle Passage-McClusky Park
  3. June 6 - 12:30 PM: Groove and Move at Tuscora Park - meet at track
  4. June 13 - 10 AM: DIY Walking Snacks at Camp Tuscazoar at the Camp Museum
  5. July 8 - 8:30 AM: Farm to Table Talk at Fort Laurens
  6. July 20 - 11:30 AM: Mindfulness and Nature Walk at the Norma Johnson Center - Conservation Drive Kiosk
  7. August 8 - 7:30 AM: Community Service Walk at Buckhorn Creek Trail - Newcomerstown Trailhead
  8. August 17 - 6 PM: Wrap-up the Summer! Sunset walk at Dover City Park - meet at playground

We encourage you to explore beautiful Tuscarawas County and find somewhere new to hike!

The Summer Walking Program ends on August 18, and if you have completed the required 30 hours of walking, return your tracker to the Tuscarawas County Extension office by the August 23 deadline and you will be able to receive a t-shirt on September 11. You can also turn in your tracker at the summer wrap-event on August 17.

T-shirt and giveaway pick-up will be held September 11 at the Tuscarawas County Fairgrounds at the Clover Café from 3 to 6 p.m.
